I've requested her kiss

I've requested her kiss
among the tumultuous crowd
The walkers raging, the mourners mourning,
The dying of the light and the coming of the night.
The time is nigh, they were saying, while we stumbled,
Trying to kiss, trying to breathe,
Away from the mildest breeze, swaying, swiverling,
Falling to the ground, our attention
Caught in either kissing or walking,
Loving or living,
Adrift in the mysterious raucus of the city,
The somber looks, the unfriendly gazes,
The pointless recurrence of steps and grimaces,
The polite measures, the artificial gestures,
The codes, the titles, the hierarchical procedures
Designed to imprisomn Creation's mistress,
The cold rules, the cruel laws, the pavement.

Against all those foes our kiss fainted,
Tumbled and dissolved below the pavement.
